Burning Haibun: Our Forests

By Devon Matthews

The heavenly blue sky blankets the world. Flushed with the vibrant, chlorophyll green of towering branches, rolling hills, and flowery seas. The land was carved by ancient currents, gushing forward and spitting out droplets dancing like diamonds in the sunshine. The warm-skinned salmon gleefully jump to feel the wind wash their scales. The wildcats dash into bushes, bursting beyond the brush to win their game of tag. Birds are singing in the canopy, fueling the world with a benign elegance.

The leaves rustle softly in the wind as distant storms loom in the distance. Gentle drops of the ever so purest water spatter on the ground, with bugs and micro organisms both shielding from and yearning to approach mother nature’s divine tears. Packs of wolves huddle under the trees, sleeping in a joint pile of warmth as the frost-springled wind threatens to consume their warmth. All throughout the forest, the graceful existence of nature endures…
