You may submit up to three pieces per issue. There is a maximum page count of two pages for poetry and ten pages for a different category per piece. There is no minimum page count.
Submissions should be double-spaced, and in Times New Roman, 12pt font. We accept both MLA and APA style format. Each piece must be clearly titled, and the grade level and class they were completed for should be included, if possible. The exact dates you completed each piece aren’t necessary.
Please submit your writing as a word document. If your piece hinges on the structure and typeset staying the same (such as in the case of a shape poem), please note this information in your submission, and we will do our best to preserve that on the webpage.
Please also submit your pieces each in their own word document, and title each document "[Title of Piece], [Last Name]", or whatever alias you prefer.
For Google Account holders, please use this link to submit your work.
This will take you to a Google Forms, where you will be asked to fill in any information that may be helpful to our editors. The titles and categories of your pieces, the your name (or a pen name, if you feel uncomfortable sharing your name on the internet), and your email address are all required, as well as the class and grade your pieces were originally for. You will also be asked to include a brief biography in third person, your preferred pronouns, and any trigger warnings or notes you may want to include with your work.
For non-Google Account holders, please submit your work via email following the guidelines below:
In the body of the email, tell us the titles of your pieces, which categories they should be considered in, any trigger warnings that should be heeded for each piece, and any notes on how you would like your piece’s formatting to be preserved, if necessary.
Please also include, separately, a brief biography written in the third person, stating your name or the pen name you wish to use, your preferred pronouns, the class and grade level each piece was written for (as well as the grade you are currently in if you have edited the piece recently,) and a few facts about yourself if you want us to include that as well.
The subject of the email should be your last name, then your first name (or simply your pen name), then whatever categories you’ve included in your submission.
Our email is kitchenmagnetcollective@gmail.com. You may also use this email to contact us regarding feedback, questions, comments, or concerns. Please see the bottom of this page for an example of how to construct your email.
After submitting, you'll hear back from us within 1-2 weeks about whether your piece was accepted.

Submission Guidelines
We do not, and will never, accept works created by AI. This is a space for works of passion that you’ve made yourself. If you couldn't be bothered to write it, we won’t be bothered to read it.
We do not accept pieces that ridicule, demean, or maliciously misrepresent any minority group. Examining reality and the state of the world is always important, and we welcome pieces that are willing to comment on the nuances of these topics. If we're not here on this earth to empathize with, learn from, and understand one another, then is there really a point to any of this at all?
Please include trigger warnings if applicable to your piece. Violent imagery, foul language, and heavy, distressing topics aren’t inherently bad to write or read about, but it’s polite to give fair warning beforehand in case someone is trying to read on a weak stomach.
Please keep the amount of profanity to a semi-professional, tasteful limit. There should be a point to the use of certain words: expression of emotion, maturity/immaturity, kindness/cruelty, eloquence/lack thereof, etc. A page full of only curse words can’t tell us anything special, but a single curse word, reserved for just the right moment, can tell us everything.
Finally, due to plagiarism and legal reasons, we cannot accept pieces that have already been published in another publication, including school magazines or papers. However, we’re totally okay with you reprinting what you’ve published with us somewhere else if you want to in the future. The rights for your work and writing will always revert back to you, but if you can, we’d love to be mentioned!
Things to Think About Before Submitting
Header: Doe, Jude. 1 Poem, 2 Reviews
Dear Kitchen Magnet Collective,
My name is Jude Doe, and I am in 7th grade. I wanted to submit one poem, titled “Orange Blossom”, that I wrote in English class in sixth grade. I also wanted to submit two book reports I did in 5th grade, “Holes by Luis Sachar” and “Rapunzel’s Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale, Illustrated by Nathan Hale”. I don’t really go into much bad stuff in the ‘Holes’ one, but there's a bit about adoption and stealing kids from their parents in the ‘Rapunzel’ one, so that might be a trigger. The formatting is okay for all of them.
Here's my bio btw:
Jude Doe is currently a 7th grader who loves to read and write. They love dinosaurs, marine biology, and playing with their dog Arlo, and they want to be a florist when they grow up.

Note: Different literature magazines will ask you to submit in different ways. If you go on to submit to any other publication, please don’t expect they will have you submit in the way we have asked.
